Is S8 polar or nonpolar? – Polarity of S8

The question is –

Is S8 polar or nonpolar?

Answer:

S8 is non-polar.

Explanation:

S8 is the chemical formula for octasulfur.

This unique, covalently-bonded molecule is non-polar as it consists of identical sulfur (S) atoms having a zero electronegativity difference among them, thus, a net zero dipole moment value.

S8 consists of eight sulfur (S) atoms, interlinked to one another.

Thus there are 8 S-S single covalent bonds in S8.

As per Pauling’s electronegativity scale, a polar covalent bond is formed between two dissimilar atoms having an electronegativity difference of at least 0.4 units.

The electronegativity value of each S-atom is 2.58, which implies that there is zero or no electronegativity difference between the covalently bonded S-atoms in each S-S bond.

Both the sulfur atoms attract the S-S shared electron cloud to the same extent.

All S-S bonds possess a zero dipole moment value.

S8 is thus a purely non-polar molecule (net µ = 0) with a crown-ringed structure.
