Is AlBr3 polar or non-polar?
⇒ AlBr3 is a non-polar molecule.
Aluminum tribromide (AlBr3) is non-polar as the dipole moments of individually polar Al-Br bonds get canceled equally in the symmetrical trigonal planar shape of the molecule.
AlBr3 consists of an aluminum (Al) atom at the center.
It is surrounded by 3 bromine (Br) atoms.
Each Al-Br bond is strongly polar due to an electronegativity difference of 1.35 units between the bonded aluminum (E.N = 1.61) and bromine (E.N = 2.96) atoms.
However, it is due to the symmetrical trigonal planar shape of AlBr3 that the net dipole moment of two downwards-pointing Al-Br bonds gets canceled equally with the dipole moment of an upwards-pointing Al-Br bond to yield a zero net dipole moment value.
Consequently, AlBr3 is non-polar (net µ = 0).
