⇒ HBrO is a polar molecule.
Hypobromous acid (HBrO) is polar as the dipole moments of polar O-Br, and O-H bonds do not get canceled equally in the bent molecular shape and geometry.
HBrO consists of a Br-O bond and an O-H bond.
A Br-O bond is moderately polar as an electronegativity difference of 0.48 units exists between a bromine (E.N = 2.96) atom and an oxygen (E.N = 3.44) atom.
Contrarily, an O-H bond is strongly polar as an electronegativity difference of 1.24 units exists between an oxygen and a hydrogen (E.N = 2.20) atom.
There are 2 lone pairs of electrons on the central O-atom, which leads to strong lone pair-lone pair and lone pair-bond pair electronic repulsions.
Thus, the HBrO molecule adopts an asymmetric bent, angular, or V-shape.
The unequal Br-O and O-H dipole moments do not get canceled equally, which leads to an overall polar molecule (net µ > 0).
