Is NH4Br polar or nonpolar? – Polarity of NH4Br

The question is –

Is NH4Br polar or nonpolar?

Answer:

NH4Br is a polar molecule.

Explanation:

Ammonium bromide (NH4Br) is a polar ionic compound composed by oppositely charged ammonium (NH4+) and bromide (Br) ions held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction.

All ionic compounds are polar in nature.

NH4+ is a non-polar molecular ion itself. It consists of four N-H bonds.

Each N-H bond is polar as it consists of an electronegativity difference of 0.84 units between the single covalently bonded nitrogen (E.N = 3.04) and hydrogen (E.N = 2.20) atoms.

The individual N-H dipole moments get canceled equally in opposite directions in the symmetrical tetrahedral shape.

Thus, it is overall non-polar (net µ = 0).

However, it carries a formal charge equal to +1.

When it gets strongly held by an equal but oppositely charged halide (Br) ion, it results in an overall polar NH4+ Br unit cell.

Consequently, NH4Br is polar with a non-uniformly distributed charge density.
