Is NO+ polar or nonpolar? – Polarity of NO+

The question is –

Is NO+ polar or nonpolar?

Answer:

NO+ is a polar molecular ion.

Explanation:

The nitrilooxonium (NO+) ion is polar as a specific electronegativity difference exists between a nitrogen and an oxygen atom.

Thus, the N-O triple covalent bond possesses a particular dipole moment value in the linearly shaped NO+ ion.

This dipole moment stays intact in the linear molecular shape as there is only one type of bond present in the molecular ion.

NO+ is composed of only two atoms i.e., a nitrogen atom and an oxygen atom. Nitrogen (E.N = 3.04) is less electronegative than oxygen (E.N = 3.44).

An electronegativity difference of 0.40 units exists between the triple covalently bonded nitrogen and oxygen atoms.

Therefore, although weakly, but the N-O triple bond is polar and possesses a small dipole moment value (symbol µ).

is NO+ polar or nonpolar

The N-O dipole moment stays uncancelled in the linear molecular shape.

Both N and O-atoms carry one lone pair of electrons each. A +1 formal charge is present on the O-atom, which is also the charge present on the ion overall.

The charged electron cloud stays non-uniformly spread over the molecular ion. Consequently, NO+ is overall polar (net µ > 0).
