Molecular geometry or shape Calculator

A molecular geometry calculator is an online tool that helps in predicting the molecular geometry or shape of a molecule using the popular AXE method.

The molecular geometry calculator is also called the molecular shape calculator. This calculator is based on the AXE method. It should be noted that molecular geometry is different from electron geometry.

How to calculate molecular geometry?

The molecular geometry can be calculated using a simple method that is AXE method.

AXE is a simple formula to represent the number of atoms bonded to the central atom in a molecule and the number of lone pairs present on the central atom.

axe method to calculate molecular geometry

After finding the number of lone pairs and bonded atoms attached to the central atom, use the VSEPR chart given below to calculate the molecular geometry or shape of a given molecule.

For instance –

  • If the number of lone pairs (E) on the central atom is 2, and the number of bonded atoms (X) attached to the central atom is 1, then the AXE formula becomes – AXE2So, the molecular geometry or shape for AXE2 according to VSEPR chart will be Linear.
  • If the number of lone pairs (E) on the central atom is 2, and the number of bonded atoms (X) attached to the central atom is also 2, then the AXE formula becomes – AX2E2So, the molecular geometry or shape for AX2E2 according to VSEPR chart will be Bent or V-shaped.

Look at the VSEPR chart given below with all the necessary data.

Bonded atoms (X) Lone pairs (E) Generic formula (AXE) Molecular geometry or shape
2 0 AX2 Linear
1 1 AXE Linear
3 0 AX3 Trigonal planar
2 1 AX2E1 Bent or V-shape
1 2 AXE2 Linear
   4 0 AX4 Tetrahedral
   3 1 AX3E Trigonal pyramidal
  2 2 AX2E2 Bent or V-shape
   1 3 AXE3 Linear
   5 0 AX5 Trigonal bipyramidal
   4 1 AX4E1 Seesaw
     3 2 AX3E2 T-shape
2 3 AX2E3 Linear
6 0 AX6 Octahedral
5 1 AX5E1 Square pyramidal
4 2 AX4E2 Square planar

Now, the question arises how will you find the number of lone pairs on the central atom of the molecule. For that, the best way to predict the number of lone pairs and bond pairs in the molecule is using a lewis structure.
